Just engage already..

I was recently listening to an interview with Scott Stratten, the brains behind Unmarketing. He was talking about the use of social media to engage customers. We tend to get all hyped up as to what engage means….and Scott in his direct manner said it is about talking to your customers.

Upon further thought, I think engaging employees is very similar to engaging customers. After all, employees want to be talked with (aka communicated to)!

What are some tools that can be used to engage with employees? Great question! Here are some of my favourites:

  • Good ol’ fashion Town Hall meetings
  • Impromptu stand up hallway meetings
  • Weekly team meetings
  • Informal checkin’s
  • Non business-y lunches (meaning no business talk)
  • Internal social media messages – i.e. private group for employees to interact like Basecamp software
  • Q&A with the big boss

There are plenty of vehicles to engage employees with. It comes down to your communication style and preference.  Just as customers want to hear from the people they do business with, so do our employees. Let’s see if we can crank this up a notch during the month of December.

Happy engaging!
